Children We Sponsor
Meet Catherine
Catherine Nanfuka, is now around 16 years old. She lives in Uganda in a Village called Mulawa. Catherine doesn't stay with her parents as her father lost both his legs in a car accident and her mother was a prostitute in the village and passed away recently. One day Catherine heard that there was free education at a local school and so she came along to see if she could apply. 200 other children turned up with their parents or guardians but there were only 30 places. Catherine like many others was turned down. However she was not going to give up, so she came back each day hoping that she would be accepted. For two weeks she kept coming back to the school and each day she would be sent home.
I was at that school and watched as children stood for hours hoping that they would receive something as basic as an education. I was amazed at how many turned up looking for something which we take so much for granted. That was when I decided that I should do something, and Abaana was birthed. I said that I would get sponsors for five children. I would go home and tell the people here that we need to do something.
The next day five children turned up to the school hoping to be accepted but expecting to get sent away. This time they didn't get sent home. Today they would start school. That was when I met Catherine. Catherine has now been attending school for ten years and she hopes that someday she will look after her Grandmother and get a job where she doesn't have to be a prostitute.
Abaana now sponsors well over 800 children and supports 1,000s each year. Here are just some of those children:
