To become a sponsor is to extend friendship and love to a desperately needy child in East Africa. War, drought, famine and disease have left thousands of children orphaned or in extreme poverty in this part of the world. Every day is a life and death struggle for children not strong enough to withstand disease because hunger has weakened their tiny bodies. Your monthly gift will provide a basic education, and other necessities such as medical care, clothing, etc. Not only will you be a tremendous blessing to the child you assist, but in turn you will experience great joy as you see your child mature and grow. Just £22 per month you can help to give a child a brighter future. . [top]
Yes! We encourage you to write letters to your child. When you set up your account we will give you an address that you can send mail to. Your child will write back to you, but please remember that many of them have never been to school before and cannot form letters yet! [top]
We recommend up to three times a year. However it is entirely up to yourself, so if you are not a writer, please do not feel that you must write every month. [top]
All children love to receive gifts! However, there are many obstacles to overcome in sending gifts to developing countries such as Uganda and Kenya. We reccomend not sending large gifts to your child but perhaps including small gifts with your letter eg stickers and balloons. Sponsors wishing to give a gift at Christmas time may do so by sending up to £10 to the Sponsorship Department. All Christmas monies are deposited into a central gift fund and at Christmas time a Field worker will purchase equal gifts for all of the children in our care. [top]
Abaana sends 95% of your donation to Uganda for children in Primary and Secondary school. That is the minimum donation amount to sponsor a child. This will cover school fees, school uniforms, scholastic materials, hot meals where possible, basic medical treatment and also the development of their education. For example, any money left over from all the children attending one school, may go towards building a new classroom. Sponsors have the option to include an extra donation. Part of this additional money is used to cover children whose sponsors are unable to continue with sponsorship. The remaining 5% is kept in the UK and used to help find new sponsors, giving even more children the chance of an education. Administration costs are covered through generous sponsors who pay extra voluntary donations and through Gift Aid (UK only).
Note: For International donors we set the rate in your local currency, as exchange rates vary over time, but Abaana commit to send the same amount per child to Uganda. [top]
