Challenge 48 Sleepout!
A big Abaana thank you!
The Abaana team would like to say a massive thanks to every single person that was involved in our Challenge 48 Sleepout! The event was such a success in every way and at the moment we are estimating our total to be over £11,000! We are still however watching the donations come in so we will keep you updated with the final figures. This money will go such a long way in transforming the lives of many who are suffering on the streets, so well done!
On what turned out to be one of the coldest weekends of the winter, 26 people braved the elements and slept out to raise money for children in Africa. Arriving in Bangor at 8pm, armed with a sleeping bag and some cardboard boxes, the challenge was to spend 24 – 48 hours on the streets to raise money for street children in Africa.
The experience was to emulate that of a Ugandan Street child and hence to experience first–hand the lives they lead and the sacrifices they make on a daily bases. Part of this challenge therefore also entailed a litter pick–up. Just as the boys in Uganda collect rubbish and sell it in order to get enough money for their food for the day, we managed to gather 9 bags of rubbish off the streets of Bangor.
Throughout the weekend participants were also not allowed to spend any money or receive support from friends or family. They had simply to rely on the generosity of passers–by to provide for their daily needs or not!
Thankfully the response from the public was overwhelming, with donations of cash, hot drinks, sandwiches, hot food and even wood and firelighters to keep us defrosted!
Abaana would like to heartily thank all those involved including; the participants, the companies that provided food and supplies, the police and the council for their organisation and assistance, the ambulance service for any emergencies, the individuals who fed and watered us and finally all those in the community who donated so selflessly!
Thanks to you we have to date been able to rise over £11,000 and counting! This money will enable us to get more boys off the street and housed and also to increase the quality of the care, shelter education and resources that we are able to provide, none of which would have been possible without you!
