To become a sponsor is to extend friendship and love to a desperately needy child in East Africa. War, drought, famine and disease have left thousands of children orphaned or in extreme poverty in this part of the world. Every day is a life and death struggle for children not strong enough to withstand disease because hunger has weakened their tiny bodies. Your monthly gift will provide a basic education, and other necessities such as medical care, clothing, etc. Not only will you be a tremendous blessing to the child you assist, but in turn you will experience great joy as you see your child mature and grow.

Yes! We encourage you to write letters to your child. The best way to do this is by e–mailing it to sponsorship@abaana.org. We will forward it to our colleagues in Uganda who will print and deliver it to your child. Your child will write back to you. In a usual year we post letters from sponsored children in June and September. You’re welcome to send a photo as well, but we do suggest a £2 donation to cover printing costs for Uganda.

We recommend up to three times a year. However it is entirely up to yourself, so if you are not a writer, please do not feel that you must write every month.

All children love to receive gifts! However, there are many obstacles to overcome in sending gifts to developing countries such as Uganda. We recommend not sending large gifts to your child but perhaps including small gifts with your letter e.g. pencils, stickers, t–shirt or light flip flops. The postal address is:

Please bear in mind the cost of postage. You may consider sending money via our Personal Gift Scheme rather than posting items. This way the gift can benefit the family and it ensures that the gift is culturally appropriate.

Abaana sends 95% of your donation to Uganda for children in Primary and Secondary school. That is the minimum donation amount to sponsor a child. This will cover school fees, school uniforms, scholastic materials, hot meals where possible, basic medical treatment and also the development of their education. For example, any money left over from all the children attending one school, may go towards building a new classroom. Part of this additional money is used to cover children whose sponsors are unable to continue with sponsorship. The remaining 5% is kept in the UK and used to help find new sponsors, giving even more children the chance of an education. Administration costs are covered through generous sponsors who pay extra voluntary donations and through Gift Aid (UK only).
Note: For International donors we set the rate in your local currency, as exchange rates vary over time, but Abaana commit to send the same amount per child to Uganda.
