The Projects - Why are we doing it?

Abaana combats poverty through various projects on the ground e.g. providing education, rescuing some of the most vulnerable street children, and improving health through providing water and sanitation.

Over the last 3 years, Abaana has rescued 21 children from the streets. Children like Lewis who took us to see where he used to sleep. Abaana gave Lewis access to a warm bed, food, and an education. But according to the UN, there are still 150 million children living on the streets worldwide.

Each year Abaana staff are in contact with many street children who desperately need shelter. By taking part in C48 you can help Abaana rescue many more of these children.

500,000 children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Abaana provides clean water and better sanitation by installing pumps, harvesting tanks for rain water and by fixing pumps that no longer work. Thanks to our supporters Abaana has already provided water to many communities.

57 million children across the world do not have access to education. Education gives a child the tools to break the poverty cycle. Abaana is working with 13 communities, where we have built schools, sponsor children and have developed other community projects.

Abaana is committed to providing education by improving these schools through constructing suitable buildings, providing school resources and training teachers.

The funds from Challenge 48 will be used in the areas of greatest need and assist Abaana in its vital work in combating poverty. If you would like your fundraising to go towards a specific area, please let us know.

When it comes to poverty it seems that many kids in Africa have no voice.

“Actions speak louder than words”. We want you to speak for them, by saying nothing! In fact say nothing for two days.

Can you go for 48 hours without saying a word? Tape up your mouth and bring some signs on cards with you.

Prepare your appeal with photos and cards. How much can you raise without saying a word?!

Over 48 hours the average person will have worked for two days or 14 hours. We want to challenge you for 48 hours to go to work - not to pay your mortgage or put food on your table. Not to pay for a holiday or your Sky subscription. For 48 hours we want you to work for children who have nothing!

The 48 hour challenge is to donate your earnings (*£95) for those two days.

If you really wanted to up the challenge you can give a week’s wages ( 48 hours actually working around *£330). * Figures based on minimum wage

Our homes are full of gadgets.. We love them and we wonder how we could live without them.

If you took some of those gadgets to a rural African village, they would admire the pretty box shape and box, but what would they be used for? The ipad would make a good place mat, The Xbox could make a nice stool.

All our gadgets are signs of how rich we have become. For 48 hours can you live with no technology? No TV, no mobile phone, no microwave, no oven, no hot showers, no eating refrigerated food. You are allowed central heating.

For 48 hours we challenge you not to wear socks or shoes*

Many children in Africa walk up to 10 miles a day barefoot. For us the problem is what to wear. We often have 5, 10, 20 or more shoes in the cupboard, but still we can’t decide.

But for many children they don’t have shoes at all. Most of the injuries we see with street kids are relating to feet. Standing on glass, dropping items on them, and with no protection they won’t heal.

We are challenging you for 48 hours to go without shoes or socks. It will be cold. It could be sore, but people will ask why you are doing it. Be ready to tell them. Hope it doesn’t snow!!

* Not advised while driving or if walking long distances outside in winter.
